2–3 inches of mulch is ideal for most landscape beds — it suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and moderates soil temperature without suffocating plant roots. More than 4 inches can cause root rot and pest harborage.
Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from tree trunks and plant stems (the "mulch volcano" look actually harms trees). Bulk delivery by the cubic yard is significantly cheaper than bagged mulch for any area over 50 sq ft.
